About Me

I am Samy Rahman and I am from Bangladeshi grew up in a period when our country was changing rapidly in terms of fashion, film and other sectors. I got good exposure to Indian and western fashion through television and media. My mother who is now an associate professor and my father a retired government employee were always persuasive about my studies. They wanted me to be either a doctor or engineer as this profession is very reputed in our country. Besides this they made me take classes on music, art and literature form a very young age. This developed my keen for creativity and art from the very beginning. I remember once I went to my mother’s school in a ‘dress as you like competition’ where I successfully helped my fellow school mates to dress up eventually earning them first prizes. Till my high schoolI studied both science and commerce but finally realizing that it was not my subject area I decided to move towards media, arts and fashion designing. Outdoor games were not my hobby but instead I enjoyed designing, playing various creative games. I developed a habit of reading renaissance history mostly Italian and Greek culture. My parents noticed my enthusiasm and I managed to pursue them to achieve me goal which was to become a fashion designer. I got enrolled in the best fashion institute in my country and completed both under graduation and masters with flying colors.

Throughout my programs besides studies I helped to design clothing and fashion in various clothing stores and fashion ramps. This paved my path slowly to a costume designer. I also took a high interest in merchandising. I was always intrigued by the communication and business involved in the fashion industry. I worked as a design developer in two reputable firms and one recently. Meanwhile my portfolios were getting better and I was never a step back from the fashion industry knowledge as I was always polishing myself with various books and articles. I also involved myself in the media and film sector as an assistant to my cousin who was is an actor. There I got exposure to costume designs and makeup in the film industry and I also took the work of scripts, lighting and shooting locations with outmost sincerity. This eventually earned my place in few roles in television dramas.

From a very young age I always dreamed to become a famous fashion designer in my country. My inspirations are Chanel, Yves St Lauren and Donna Karen. I always believed in freedom of the people and their desire to wear anything that suits them. Thus I always wanted to bring a new sense of fashion and as well develop it in my country. There are many tribes in our country like the “Chakma, Garo, Mong etc.” near the hilly landscapes each of them having a different culture. I wanted to bring the tribal fashion prominent in my country through working on tribal designs. I developed my own clothing business with a partner to understand the demand and the market of fashion as well.

But in spite of all these things misfortunes happened as our country is very conservative and non-secular. I faced political nepotism in my office and internship and managed to complete it with great difficulty. People around were not open minded about fashion and my ideas. I noticed most firms in my country were plagiarizing fashion and lacked knowledge about fashion forecasting. In the society as well there are limitations to fashion and clothing especially for women. Gradually I lost interest in my workplace and tried focusing on studies and pursued my masters. I also successfully finished graphics designing and photography courses which were mainly my hobbies. Now I am looking forward to explore and get more exposure about arts, management and entrepreneurship. I think its time to create something new, Now I am trying to develop my own Company.
